Learning from the Land, in the City is a series of four seasonal walks exploring the ecology of Winnipeg’s urban landscape. Each walk will explore a different theme through field walks in the urban environment that bring together experts from the worlds of design, ecology, community development and more. Speakers will share diverse ways of knowing about the land, weaving a holistic picture of the urban environment and our relationship with it.

SPRING ~ RETURN OF THE FLOODWATERS

The first walk in this series begins with water, corresponding to the Spring thaw and return of the floodwaters. The story of the annual cycle of flooding on the Red and Assiniboine Rivers is an ancient one going back many thousands of years. It is a fitting place to begin our series exploring the connection between systems in nature and cities.

Gathering on the swollen banks of the Red River along Waterfront Drive in downtown Winnipeg, this walk will weave together a story about the changing landscape and impacts of urbanization on our relationship with water. Join us as we learn about:

The traditional cultural and spiritual significance of water for Indigenous peoples
The geological history of the Red River valley, retreat of the glaciers and function of watersheds
The annual cycle of flooding and its importance for the health wildlife, plants and ecosystems
Colonization and the ways that urban development has changed the rivers
The infrastructure of water access and control, Winnipeg's Aqueduct and its devastating impacts on the Shoal Lake 40 First Nation community
The downstream impacts of stormwater runoff and sewage spills into the Red River
Green infrastructure solutions that can help manage water resources in more resilient ways
