Negotiating Employment Contracts
Presenter: Chris Broughton – Principal Consultant/HR Business Partner, UpSourced HR
Chris Broughton has focused his career working for organizations that want to invest in their people, and has been fortunate to gain invaluable experience in many areas of these growing organizations. He has been working in the Human Resources profession for over 15 years. Chris attended both the Lethbridge College and the University of Lethbridge, earning a Bachelor of Management, majoring in Human Resources and Labour Relations. He currently holds the Chartered Professional in Human Resources (CPHR), the Senior Professional in Human Resources designation (SPHRi), the Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP), and is a licensed Professional Investigator in the province of Alberta. Experience includes strategic human resources, recruitment, HRIS implementation, workplace investigations, collective bargaining, employee relations, health & safety, and policy/procedures.
In this session, we will review the elements of an employment contract and how to know when and how to negotiate terms of that contract. Participants will be given different tools, knowledge, and resources to understand their own value and how they can use this to their advantage when securing employment. There will be an opportunity to ask questions from our HR industry professional who will be giving you the perspective from the employer side of the negotiation process.

Starting a Business as a Newcomer
Presenter: Paloma Navarro – Client Intake Coordinator, WESTEM/Tecconnect
Paloma has over 20 years of success in North and South America working with entrepreneurs and participating in multiple community economic development projects.
Paloma is originally from Chile and has a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration, a Master in Computer Arts & Communications, and a Diploma in Implementation of Quality Management Systems. Being fluent in both English and Spanish has enabled her to expand her support for entrepreneurs.
In her journey to date, she has embraced several ventures like tourism operator, restaurant owner, management consulting, and training endeavors, experiences that have helped her to understand and be on the client side. Having worked as an Economic Development Officer in rural Southern Alberta, and as Self-Employment Program Lead Facilitator at Momentum Calgary, Paloma has developed a passion working with entrepreneurs helping and supporting them to succeed.

The goal of this workshop is to help newcomers determine their fit for entrepreneurship and to explore the steps & resources to starting a business in Alberta. Also, getting a good understanding in what it means to run your own business in Canada.
