Event description

Description

With the impacts of climate change already being felt in British Columbia, new risks are emerging for infrastructure, the economy, and the environment that can impact public safety and quality of life. Professionals have a duty to act in the public interest and are subject to legal responsibilities and standards of care. These responsibilities could expose professionals to legal liability relating to climate impacts and associated damages if proper standards of care are not met. Professionals must augment their existing skills with new information necessary to plan for, (re)design for, and adapt to, a climate-adjusted future.

Fraser Basin Council and Engineers and Geoscientists BC are hosting this one-day workshop for professionals on how climate change could impact their professional roles and responsibilities. The aim of the workshop is to encourage professionals to integrate climate change considerations into their decision-making and empower them to make the case for adaptation within their organizations. Zizzo Strategy will present on the legal framework for climate change adaptation and professional responsibility and avoiding negligence. West Coast Environmental Law will speak to the context of BC-specific legislation, relevant regulations and case law.

This workshop is open to a range of professionals, including planners, engineers, environmental managers, asset managers, and others working in the climate change risk domain.

*Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Presenters:

Joanna Kyriazis, Zizzo Strategy

Deborah Carlson, West Coast Environmental Law
