ABOUT THE SHOW:

This unique programme of the music of the Métis and the European settlers in Québec is experimental in nature. Researching the European origins of Métis songs, now sung in Michif, French and English, and knowing that Indigenous youth were adept viol players. The concert is a recreation of the music-making that flourished in 17th century Quebec. Inspired by French 17th century consort songs, new arrangements include remarkable Métis melodies for voice and viols, delightfully cushioned between spectacular viol music and airs de cour by composers who’s music traversed the Atlantic.

Born in amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton, Canada), Jonathon Adams is an Indigenous (Cree-Métis) baritone. In concert, they have appeared as a soloist with Sigiswald Kuijken, Hans-Christoph Rademann, Helmut Rilling, Václav Luks, Ensemble BachPlus, Vox Luminis, il Gardellino, and B’Rock Orchestra at Opera-Ballet Flanders. In 2021 Jonathon was named the first ever artist-in-residence at Early Music Vancouver. Jonathon is based in Canada and The Netherlands. They have attended The Royal Academy of Music (London), the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, and The Victoria Conservatory of Music where they studied with Nancy Argenta. They also studied privately with Dame Emma Kirkby, and Edith Wiens. At the Dutch National Opera Academy Jonathon studied with Rosemary Joshua and Olivier Lallouette.

Mélisande Corriveau, Jessy Dubè and Felix Deak have joined Susie Napper to form Les Voix humaines Consort of Viols to take a refreshing look at the exquisite repertoire from the 17th century. Our unique, controversial ideas offer a new profile to consort playing in which rhythmic freedom and ornamentation play an integral role. Our 2017 recording of Dowland’s Lachrimae is an example of our novel way of approaching a piece considered untouchable canon amongst viol players!

As well as the grand English consort repertoire, Bach’s Art of Fugue and the Purcell Fantasias, the Consort performs lesser known discoveries by Cima, Trabaci, Lupo, Moulinier and Charpentier to which we bring years of experience and experimentation as viol, recorder, fiddle and bass violinists!
