Event description
Event for Muslim women and non-binary folks ages 15-30 to come together, break fast, and talk openly about mental health in our community.

About this Event

Salaam and Ramadan Kareem all! Empower'em, a local grassroots organization, is embarking on a new project which focuses on Mental Health in the Muslim community specifically among women and non-binary folks between ages of 15-30 through peer-support, art, and other activities. We hope you can join us at the Mental Health Iftar, our very first event! Since our goals focus on community building, safe spaces, and reflection we figured a Ramadan Iftar would be the perfect opportunity for us to introduce ourselves to you all. During this event we will take the time to reflect on what mental health means not only in the broader sense but specifically in our communities. There will be lots of food for everyone to break their fast or eat with old, and hopefully new, friends for those who are not fasting. The night will start off with some introductions and we'll have some activities sprinkled through which will hopefully get the much needed conversation of mental health rolling.

We welcome and encourage all refugees, newcomers, converts, women with disabilities, non-binary folks, LGBTQ+ Muslims and Allies to attend.

As we want to create a safe space for all we have some expectations of our guests:

  • come with an open mind and heart
  • remember that everyone's journey with mental health and Islam are different and it is not our duty to judge
  • be ready to share but only as much as your comfortable with, we want to see you all there even if you feel like you're not ready to participate
  • respect people's identities that may be new to you or different from your own
  • do not make assumptions about people; their race, gender, sexuality, the languages they speak or anything else really

Accessibility: Youth Ottawa is located on the main floor and does not require going up or down any stairs

Land Acknowledgement: As an organization run by women and non binary folks of colour it is important to understand how our struggles are directly intertwined with those Indigenous to the land we work on and that any work we do must actively strive for decolonization. This event is taking place on unceded, stolen, Algonquin territory.

This event would not be possible without the grants we received from Inspirit https://inspiritfoundation.org/ and Girls Action Foundation http://www.fillesdaction.ca
