Join the d.talks discussion on the notion of community as it relates to place, materiality and the public. What alters with production as we source what’s in close proximity? The event is a double feature: a panel discussion followed by a film screening.
- panel discussion: 6pm - 7:30pm
- community supper: 7:30-8:45pm ($20)
- screening: 8:45 - 10pm
the panel discussion: (6pm)
Artists Yvonne Mullock and Peter von Tiesenhausen will join architect Richard Kroeker in a panel discussion and question period. Kroeker, finding inspiration from early First Nations designs and employing an innovative use of materials, and von Tiesenhausen, whose attention to the land shepherded in a cultural centre for a small town in Northern Alberta—both draw from the immediate surroundings with built form. Mullock’s work with Islanders off the coast of Newfoundland results in new quilts for the Fogo Island Inn that are rooted in local techniques and material memory. The panel discussion will be moderated by Kate Thompson of Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.
Richard Kroeker - Nova Scotia architect
Peter von Tiesenhausen - Alberta artist
Yvonne Mullock - Calgary artist
moderated by: Kate Thompson, CMLC
the community supper: (7:30pm)
When we say community, what do we mean? Who are the people that comprise community? For those not attending the RAIC keynote address, we are hosting a family style supper. This is an opportunity to break bread with others, furthering the exploration of what community is comprised of. The community supper is an additional $20 advance ticket.
the film screening: (8:45pm)
See the documentary film, Strange & Familiar, about the social entrepreneurial transformation of Fogo Island from reliance on cod fishing to an artistic and tourism destination. Architect Todd Saunders, responsible for the design of the Inn and artist residencies on the island, will take questions following the film.
Don't miss the Lost Spaces Found exhibition in the windows of the Centre Street LRT Platform across the street from the Legion.
