Event description

Description

Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) and the IWK Health Centre are pleased to welcome Marwan Abouelela and David Hancock from the Biomedical Engineering Department at the IWK Health Centre and Dr. David Simpson, Medical Director, IWK NICU, as the guest speakers for the NSHA Information Management & Technology Let's Talk Informatics presentation:

An Innovative Approach and Technology Solution to Manage Clinical Alarms in the New Single Family Room (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit - NICU) at the IWK Health Centre.

Research confirms that more than 70% of clinical alarms are unnecessary. This exposes clinicians to a high volume of undesirable alarms. This alarm fatigue can be associated with an increased risk to patients. Nonetheless, some clinical alarms will signal care providers to life threatening situations requiring urgent intervention. As the IWK Health Centre embarked on the redevelopment project to convert its old open bay NICUs to new single family room care environments, there was a need to develop a new clinical alarm management strategy.

Please join us to learn more about alarm fatigue and how the NICU Alarm Management Task Force developed and implemented a strategy to manage clinical alarms in a new single family room environment in the NICU. The presenters will discuss the technologies that were integrated to ensure safe patient care, staff confidence and family satisfaction.
