LGBTQ+ Awareness Sessions Description:

LGBTQ+ Awareness & How to be an Ally
This introductory session is divided into two main components; Queer 101 focuses on LGBTQ+
terminology and language, clarifying terms and providing a space for discussion about sexual orientation and gender identity. The second portion is an introduction to LGBTQ+ Allyship.

  • Sept. 19, 2018 11-12pm in Richardson Oilseed

Queer 102
Queer 102 expands on the basic terminology presented in OUTreach Southern Alberta's Queer 101, delving deeper into the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals. This session unpacks topics such as passive homophobia and transphobia, passing privilege, and inclusive versus reductive labels, in order to educate allies on some of the lesser discussed realities of the queer experience. Participants will learn to identify their own impact on frequently encountered challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, and begin the process of evaluating productive allyship practices.

  • Sept. 19, 2018 1:30- 2:30 in Richardson Oilseed

Productive Allyship
Productive allyship is a complex process that balances privilege, responsibility, and education. This session dismantles the misconception of allyship as an "identity" by focusing on the power relationships between allies and marginalized individuals. Participants will learn how to begin the process of identifying, evaluating, and exercising their privilege in order to work in solidarity with LGBTQ+ individuals and other marginalized groups.

  • Oct. 22, 2018 1:00-2:30pm in TE1228
  • Feb. 6, 2019 1:00-2:30 in TE1228

Trans Awareness
This session focuses on expanding and establishing recognition of gender minorities including, but not limited to, transgender, non-binary, and genderqueer identities. Participants will learn how to better support trans students, colleagues, and friends in this interactive workshop, which will also guide participants through the
process of evaluating language and text for trans-inclusivity.

  • Jan. 28, 2019 1-2pm in TE1228

The Birds & The Birds, The Bees & The Bees
This session is presented in a collaboration between OUTreach Southern Alberta and ARCHES, striving to create sex positivity by opening dialogue around consent, boundaries, safer sexual practices, STIs, LGBTQ+ needs in our health care system, and resources.

  • Sept. 19, 2018 3-4pm in Richardson Oilseed
  • Feb. 13, 2019 1-2pm in TE1228
