Description

A Sane, Common-Sense Approach to Policy Writing for Community Leagues

Let’s be honest: policy writing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. For some, policy writing is synonymous with lengthy meetings, endless rewriting, and nearly coming to blows over proper comma placement. All too often, the reasons we write policy in the first place – to save time, reduce risk, clarify and protect organizational values, and help us make better decisions – are lost in a frenzy of wordsmithing. This workshop is based on a simple principle: we need to liberate policy from the policy nerds. Anyone can write a good policy, and more people should write policy, because policies need to be simple, clear, short, and written in accessible language people actually understand. The focus of this workshop will be Board governance policy, but we’ll also explore how this special category of policy works hand-in-hand with the operational policies community leagues also need. We’ll focus mostly on writing policy, but we’ll also tackle what comes next so policies don’t gather digital dust on someone’s desktop once they’re finished. We’ll spend the minimum required amount of time gawking at a slideshow (i.e. secretly checking our phones), so we can devote the bulk of the session to open discussion, group activities and practical, hands-on applications.

Have you ever thought: “my league really needs a policy to prevent {*insert ridiculous thing*} from happening again, but I’m no policy expert, so I’ll just let it go.” If so, this workshop is for you. But don’t worry: policy nerds are also strongly encouraged to join the conversation (the facilitator is one, after all). Our approach benefits them too by bringing more people into the fun!

About the Facilitator

Ben Whynot has ten years of experience with five non-profit Boards; he always seems to end up chairing the policy and governance committee for some reason. Prior to his Board adventures, he churned out bylaws and policies for several student unions. Ben has facilitated workshops for the Board Development Program, took the ICD’s non-profit governance course, and completed the Max Bell Foundation’s Public Policy Training Institute on non-profits and policy advocacy. He’s excited to learn from the participants about the unique dynamics of policy writing in a community league context.
