Event description

Description

These authors definitely bring the heat with new books about environmental sustainability, social values and the search for the lost Franklin Expedition in the Arctic. Don’t miss the chance to hear Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Paul Watson, founding president of the Environics group Michael Adams, and Calgary’s own expert thinker on sustainability and the global clean-tech industry, Chris Turner.

Could it Happen Here?: Canada in the Age of Trump and Brexit (Michael Adams)

Americans elected Donald Trump. Britons opted to leave the European Union. Far-right, populist politicians channeling anger at out-of-touch “elites” are gaining ground across Europe. In vote after shocking vote, citizens of Western democracies have pushed their anger to the top of their governments’ political agendas.

Amid this roiling international scene, Canada appears placid, at least on the surface. After a year in power, the centrist federal government continues to enjoy majority approval, suggesting an electorate not as bitterly split as the ones to the south or in Europe. As skeptics point out, however, Brexit and a Trump presidency were unthinkable until they happened. Could it be that Canada is not immune to the same forces of populism, social fracture, and backlash that have afflicted other parts of the world?

The Patch (Chris Turner)

The Patch is the definitive story of the oil sands and its high-stakes collision between two conflicting worldviews: one of industrial triumph and another of environmental stewardship. Told through the eyes of those who live in it day-to-day from the truck operators, entrepreneurs and politicians who make a living mining the oil sands’ riches to the scientists, activists and Indigenous peoples who seek to curb the area’s unrestrained growth, Chris Turner considers the most important question: if we are to both fuel the world and save it, what do we do about the patch?

Ice Ghosts (Paul Watson)

In Ice Ghosts, Paul Watson takes readers on an unforgettable journey into the unforgiving North in search of the vanished Franklin and his crew. Watson was on the icebreaker leading the mission that discovered the Erebus in 2014, and he broke the news of the discovery of the Terror in 2016. Ice Ghosts masterfully weaves together history and contemporary reporting in a full account of these events, which, as Watson reveals, only found success when longtime prejudice against Inuit forms of knowledge was set aside.
