Event description

Description

In the early 1990’s Judith Thompson wrote this play, loosely based on a real-life unsolved murder case. With our ghostly narrator intact (a nine-year-old Portuguese immigrant girl) Thompson has taken us on a journey through Toronto’s underbelly- into the lives and very dark, private moments of a community in search of connection.

Within its plot are themes of Immigration, Isolation, and patterns of both Betrayal & Redemption, as well as Life & Death. So intrigued with the latter theme that we’ve created a Chorus of the Dead… Underneath all runs a strong current of Girl Power in our urban tale which we’ve chosen to set in 1995. It’s interesting to note that the expression “Girl Power” is credited to an american punk band, Bikini Kill, who published a ‘zine of the same name in 1991.* (years before the Spice Girls hit the scene!)

One evening, when sending out the next day’s rehearsal schedule, I joked to the actors that I think I’d written my Director’s Notes when I said I needed to “…deeply reflect on how truly bizarre this play is- how fantastical, surreal, gripping, heart-wrenching, touching, glorious, shocking, tragic and, ultimately, transcending…”

I leave you much to ponder before our curtain goes up. This show is not for the faint of heart. Please keep an open mind.
