A LiterASIAN Workshop
Turning to History for Inspiration: Writing the Historical Novel with Alice Poon

What is the relationship between reality and fiction? How does a writer who became an author after a lifetime in the corporate world leverage both genres to produce a piece of writing so good that one can’t tell the difference between the two? Having written the non-fiction Land and the Ruling Class in Hong Kong, which won the 2011 Hong Kong Book Prize, Alice Poon turned her writing energy into finally publishing a epic novel, The Green Phoenix set in 17th century imperial China. How did a writer who grew up reading Jin Yong’s martial arts and chivalry novels turn her imagination and writing prowess into the realm of fiction writing in her second career? Join us as Alice Poon offers her insight into the secrets of the life of a writer.
