How to enjoy food, meause your blood glucose and use your supplies

Workshop Content
History of Diabetes
Overview of Endocrine system.
Description of Diabetes including different types, signs and symptoms, warning signs, and signs/symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
Diet for the diabetic patients.
Roles of Dietitians and Nutritionists.
Medications and insulin’s. Including drug classifications, Adverse effects, proper doses, interactions.
Diabetes and pregnancy. Risk factors, treatments and what it means for the future.
Diabetes in children. Diagnosing, healthy diets and complications.
Exercise and the role it plays for the diabetic.
Monitoring blood sugar levels. How to use and care for home glucometers, Supplies required, and laboratory tests for the Diabetic.
Diabetic care including foot care, vision care, wound care, and how to deal with infections.
Chronic conditions associated with Diabetes including review of each bodily system involved and how to prevent and/or slow progression.
Hands on demonstration and practice with diabetic supplies including
– Insulin pens
– Insulin cartridges and vials,
– Insulin needles and how to properly use and dispose of supplies.
Hands on demonstration and practice with multiple different home glucose monitors including how to properly care for equipment and how to take blood sugar levels.

Duration
1 session for 7 hours

Instructor – Sarah Hampton LPN (Licensed Practical Nurse)
LPN in good standing with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta since 1999.
Graduated from Bow Valley College Practical Nurse Program in 1999.
Headed into 19th year of Nursing with experience in Allergy testing, Medical Offices, Community care, Retirement residents, Assisted living facilities, Continuing Care facilities and Educational Institutions.
10+ years of dementia care experience, 15+ years experience with Geriatric population, 4 years experience as an adult educator in Medical Office Assistant, Health Care Aid, Practical Nurse, and Pharmacy Assistant Programs.
Certified for Vaccine Administration specialization in 2008.
