About this Event

DESCRIPTION: At this community event, you will experience a 40 minute Love Your Brain yoga class taught by Monica Alvano followed by a 20 min discussion with Monica and the George Washington University Hospital Outpatient Rehab therapist regarding TBI recovery. Yoga mats and light refreshments will be provided.

The LoveYourBrain Foundation (LYB) was established by brothers, Adam and Kevin Pearce, following Kevin’s severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) from a snowboarding accident before the 2010 Olympics. Kevin’s traumatic brain injury gave us a glimpse into a new world—one where many people affected by this injury are plagued by intense isolation and disempowerment. This revealed the need for programs to rebuild community and resilience for healing. LoveYourBrain chose yoga because we believe its holistic and dynamic nature can meet the individual needs of each person with TBI, from rebuilding strength and balance, to managing stress, and finding comfort in a community of people with shared experiences.

TEACHER BIO: Monica Alvano began practicing yoga over 10 years ago and received her 200hr certification through her first teacher, Brittanie DeChino via Flow Yoga Center, DC in 2014. Since then, Brittanie brought Monica to Sri Dharma Mittra of New York City, from whom she has never looked back and has now trained at the 500 and 800hr levels. At age 80, Sri Dharma Mittra continues to share the science of yoga since he began over 50 years ago. Dharma Yoga — graceful yet challenging, physical-meditative-spiritual, and based in compassion — provides the foundation for each of Monica’s classes. In addition, Monica also teaches Yoga for Traumatic Brain Injuries via the Love Your Brain Foundation, Restorative Yoga and Mat Pilates. Monica is honored to share yoga as a tool available for everyone to find radiant physical health, mental clarity and spiritual bliss by way of the inner teacher deep inside each of our hearts.
