Event description
Loving Your Broken Heart: A Two Day Compassion Focused Therapy Workshop with Deirdre Fay MSW LICSW CFT Trainer

About this Event

This experiential workshop will give you theory and practices from Compassion Focused Therapy to enhance emotional wellbeing, reduce anxiety and depression, maintains healthy habits and help form better relationships.

Compassion sounds like a good thing until we practice applying it. It’s especially difficult when there’s underlying suffering that needs healing. Yet, rapidly expanding research demonstrates how compassion provides a way to ease the wounded heart and build a foundation for wisdom, strength and courage.

Cultivating compassion is the emotional attitude that buffers suffering. It forms a bridge between attachment theory and traditional meditation allowing us to be with the pain of life without separation. We will explore the seven fundamental attachment needs that result in shame, self-criticism, isolation, negative self-talk when things go wrong.

Building the courageous mindset of compassion provides emotional strength and resilience, allowing us to admit our shortcomings, forgive ourselves, and respond to ourselves and others with care and respect, and be fully human.

Compassion can be learned by anyone, even those who didn’t receive enough affection in childhood or who find it embarrassing to be kind to oneself. It’s especially important in psychotherapy balancing out the suffering of life.

Learning Objectives:

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • Practice embodying compassion
  • Handle difficult emotions with greater ease
  • Motivate yourself with kindness rather than criticism
  • Transform challenging relationships, old and new
  • Manage caregiver fatigue
  • Practice the art of embodying, receiving, savoring and self-appreciation

About the Presenter:

Deirdre Fay, LICSW, has decades of experience exploring the intersection of trauma, attachment, yoga, and meditation. Having meditated since the 70s and lived in a yoga ashram for six years in the 80s and 90s, Deirdre brings a unique perspective to being in the body. In the 90s, Deirdre was asked to teach yoga and meditation to those in the dissociative unit at McLean Hospital. Having amassed skill sets in trauma treatment (as a supervisor under the guidance of Bessel van der Kolk at the Trauma Center), attachment theory (13 years of training with Daniel Brown), and body therapy (as a trainer in Sensorimotor Psychotherapy), Deirdre now teaches an integrative approach which Chris Germer calls “a radically positive approach to healing trauma”. Deirdre is both a qualified teacher in the Mindful Self-Compassion tradition as well as a Compassion Focused Therapy trainer. Deirdre founded the Becoming Safely Embodied skills groups and is the author of Attachment-Based Yoga & Meditation for Trauma Recovery, Becoming Safely Embodied Skills Manual, and co-author of Attachment Disturbances for Adults as well as chapters in Neurobiological Treatments of Traumatic Dissociation.
