On August 27th, join us for an interactive noon hour chat on climate change policy and innovation. This discussion will explore topics including Alberta’s methane equivalency agreement, how industry is adapting to new climate change policy with clean technologies, and how young professionals fit into the future of the energy industry. ► About the Speakers

Gary Millard is a Senior Advisor, Energy & Climate Change with Suncor Energy and an environmental scientist working on guiding business and society through our latest energy transition. Gary received his B.Sc. in Environmental Science from the University of Calgary in 2000 and is a Professional Geologist with APEGA. He worked as an environmental consultant doing assessment and remediation of contaminated sites before moving to industry in 2004. After having spent a decade cleaning up contamination, he had a few ideas on how it could be prevented and moved into environmental and regulatory compliance in the oil sands business. Most recently, Gary has been working on climate change and energy transition issues, including examining clean technology opportunities and other innovations available to the oil sands industry and the energy market as a whole, including coordinating participation in COSIA – Canada’s Oil Sands Innovation Alliance, The Clean Resource Innovation Network (CRIN), and the Energy Futures Lab.

Gerald Palanca is the manager of the Alberta Energy Regulator’s Air Technical Implementation team. His team is responsible for air and climate policy assurance, mainly focusing on the design and implementation of Alberta’s upstream oil and gas methane regulatory framework. Gerald has over 16 years of oil and gas experience. He worked extensively on regulatory projects, flaring and venting operations. Before joining the AER, Gerald held various positions for a major oil and gas producer in acquisitions and divestments, energy efficiency, and regulatory compliance roles. Gerald has an applied bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering and a technical diploma in Chemical Engineering. Gerald served as chair of the Canadian Standards Association emissions committee, chair of the Western Regulators Forum emissions committee, member of the Government of Alberta’s Methane Reduction Oversight Committee, and various Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada committees.
