Lunch & Learn Panel Discussion: Sales for Startups

Please note: There will be a $10 charge per session. There will be no refunds, but tickets are transferrable. A light lunch will be provided to registrants.

We all know that sales is the key to growing a company, but what does that look like? What’s the difference between sales, marketing, and business development? If hearing terms like “prospecting” “leads,” “conversion,” and “value proposition,” without an understanding of how to piece everything together is frustrating, then this is the panel for you.

Join us as the University of Alberta Venture Mentoring Service and TEC Edmonton team up to bring you a panel of sales and marketing experts who will give you an overview of what it means to sell your product or service. While the discussion will be focused on the technology sector, there will also be insights that apply to other industries. Please join us for a light lunch to get some practical guidance and a clear understanding of what it takes to sell your product. The panel will be followed by an opportunity for some Q&A.

About the Presenters

Kurian Tharakan
Kurian has been a TEC Executive in Residence since 2014, assisting TEC clients with their go to market strategy. Kurian brings over 27 years of sales and marketing experience to his practice. Prior to TEC Edmonton, he founded StrategyPeak Sales and Marketing Advisors, a marketing strategy consulting firm, advising companies in numerous sectors including professional services, manufacturing, distribution, high technology, software, non-profit, medicine, and the life sciences. Preceding StrategyPeak, Mr. Tharakan was a vice-president sales & marketing for an Alberta-based software firm where his team achieved notable wins with several members of the US Fortune 500. Beyond advisory services, a significant portion of Kurian’s work involves teaching and writing on sales and marketing topics.

April Jones
April is a results-driven, innovative, and visionary sales executive with a record of accomplishment in driving the growth of business-to-business and business-to-consumer operations, including software, telecom, wireless and financial services.

From her role as Senior Global Sales Manager at Intuit Canada to her current position as the Director of Sales for Jobber, she is recognized as an effective leader, communicator, and coach who adds value with clients and internal staff.

Teruel Carrasco
Teruel has had a varied and exciting career from working as a stockbroker in both Canada and Santiago, Chile, to founding or co-founding several technology startups. Having also worked for many Fortune 500 companies in key strategic roles, he has a passion for business development. His methodical approach has assisted companies in successfully entering international markets including the U.S and South America.

A passionate technology enthusiast, Teruel excels at creating business and marketing campaigns for new technologies, driving sales for his clients. Currently, he's a Senior Executive for Western Canada at COMPAREX AG, a German IT consulting and Cloud-based professional services firm.
