Event Information
About this Event
December's Lunch Poems reading features poets George Bowering & Gladys Maria Hindmarch.
George Bowering
George Bowering is a senior poet who is associated with the sequenced poem as seen in his most recent book of extended works, Taking Measures (Talon Books). Also a novelist and short story writer, his most recent work of fiction is titled No One (ECW Press), a contemporary treatment of Odysseus's travels. He has published essays about writing and reading, and his most recent book on this topic is aptly called Writing and Reading (New Star Books). In addition, he has produced many memoirs, the most recent being The Hockey Scribbler (ECW Press). He has published a great many books but would throw it all away for one buzzer-beating, game-winning, two-handed dunk.
Gladys Maria Hindmarch
Gladys Maria Hindmarch was born in 1940 in Ladysmith, B.C. She played tenor sax in Carter’s dance band, which might explain her love of variable prose rhythms. At UBC, Warren Tallman was her freshman English prof, and he encouraged her to write freely. She met lifelong friends who in 1961 formed the lively Tish group (Bowering, Davey, Kearns, Hogg, Dawson, Reid, Wah, Butling, Cull, Marlatt) and attended English 410, known as the Vancouver Poetry Conference, with poet instructors Creeley, Olson, Avison, Ginsberg, Levertov, Duncan, Whalen. She began teaching at Vancouver City College in 1965 and ended teaching at Capilano College (now a university) in 2002. Talonbooks recently published her collected works, Wanting Everything, which includes books, notebook entries, interviews, letters and reviews.
