Rick Whittaker - VP Investments & Chief Technology Officer, Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC)
Global demand for energy in remote communities is expected to increase from a current installed capacity of 375MW ($3B/yr) to 11,000MW ($12B/yr) in 2020. For utility companies, these communities are logistic nightmares and costly to service. Yet, as resource exploration and development drives demand for basic utility services into increasingly remote environments, the problem is only getting larger. Coincident with this development is the growing need for basic infrastructure in indigenous communities—in Canada’s backyard and around the globe--who have lagged behind far too long. Addressing these challenges is the mission that has been undertaken over the past 10 years with Sustainable Development Technology Canada. SDTC’s CTO, Rick Whittaker, will present this strategic initiative, a novel approach to infrastructure issues, and a focus on the ACS-150™--an integrated Utility-in-a-Box solution that has emerged out of a collection of Canada’s best clean technology companies.
Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) is Canada's not-for-profit foundation that finances and supports the development and demonstration of clean technologies which provide solutions to issues of climate change, clean air, water quality and soil, and which deliver economic, environmental and health benefits to Canadians. SDTC is Canada's most prolific investor in this space. To date, SDTC has completed 22 funding rounds and allocated a total of $598 million to 246 projects. That amount has been leveraged with an additional $1.6 billion in funding from other project partners for a total project value of $2.2 billion. Rick Whittaker, as SDTC Chief Technology Officer, and via previous positions, has reviewed or been involved in the approval of the entire SDTC portfolio since inception. This Mindfirst Seminar provides a rare opportunity for technology companies, industry professionals and remote community stakeholders to engage with Mr. Whittaker to better understand the SDTC's strategic positioning of portfolio companies and overall investment theme direction.
