MacHANd Half Day 2025

The McMaster University Hand, Arm, Nerve (MacHANd) Group is an interdisciplinary team promoting excellence in education, clinical service, and research for hand and upper limb injuries, diseases, and disorders.

This year's event is targeted towards early-career professionals: Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Physician Assistants, Residents, Students, Sports Medicine Physicians, Chiropractors, Emergency Medicine Physicians, Family Physicians, Physiatrists, Radiologists, and all other Health Professions interested in upper extremity disorders.

The learning objectives for this event are:

Participants will discuss the epidemiology, clinical features and presentation of two common hand and upper limb conditions seen across care settings, including primary care: carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and osteoarthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal joint (CMC OA).
Participants will be able to identify the need for diagnostic imaging and nerve conduction studies relative to physical assessment findings to make recommendations appropriate to their roles and scope of practice for CTS and CMC OA.
Participants will describe the roles and responsibilities of OT, PT, and the family physician in contrast to a (plastics or orthopedic) surgeon in the management spectrum for CTS and CMC OA, using case scenarios.
Participants will apply their learning on differential diagnosis in a hands-on skills lab practicing the special tests used for CTS and CMC OA.
