Description

Presents: Making Sense of Challenging Behaviour

This workshop will offer something for everyone.

Caregivers and professionals supporting individuals with mental health challenges often express difficulties in handling “challenging behaviours”. People living with these challenges themselves, and their families, are also clearly struggling to make sense of why people do what they do.

This workshop will provide an understanding of the neurobiology of sensory processing and emotional problems that can result in complex and challenging behaviour. It is based on cutting-edge research that bridges translational research from the fields of neuroscience, occupational therapy, psychology and trauma psychology. Through lecture, videotape analysis, problem solving labs and group discussion, participants will learn to make sense of a wide range of mental health complexities.

Workshop Objectives:

Upon completion of this 2 day workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the neurobiology of challenging behaviour
  • Distinguish between sensory, emotional and cognitive components of behaviour
  • Analyze various overlapping contributions to behavioural problems
  • Integrate theories of intervention into a holistic approach to complex behaviours
  • Acquire a toolbox of treatment techniques and relationship-building strategies

Day One Topics:

  • Analysis of challenging behaviour
  • Is it sensory or is it behavioural?
  • Sensory contributions to challenging behaviour
  • Attachment and trauma
  • How to analyze relational components of challenging behaviour

Day Two Topics:

  • Treating challenging behaviour with attunement and dialoguing skills
  • Regulation through relationship
  • Sensory strategies for managing complex and self-abusive behaviours
  • Integrating treatment strategies in diverse environments
