Event description

Description

Knowledge in 3D modelling and 3D printing are vital job skills in the workplace of the 21st Century.

The ability to conceptualize and create something completely original and real just from mere imagination has diverse applications in all fields of human endeavour. This transferrable skillset ties together all aspects of science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) education. Its global demand and universal appeal will continue to accelerate in years to come.

In this full-day PA Day workshop, students from Grade 1-4 will learn how to design and make stuff using desktop 3D printing in a special Art or Math project.

In the first part, participants will explore some basic questions about 3D printing as related to Art and Math: Who are the people involved in 3D printing? What 3D printing technologies are there? How is 3D printing applicable in our daily lives? When and where are 3D printing deployed? Why is it important to use 3D printing? We will also discuss how to find online sources for making things.

In the second part, participants will learn how to design virtual 3D objects using basic CAD programs. We will be exploring Tinkercad and MeshMixer for this purpose.

In the third part, participants will learn how to operate a desktop 3D printer to make their virtual objects real. We will be having fun with our compact MakerBot and LulzBot 3D printers.

In the final part, participants will follow guidelines to complete a special project by designing and making an object with a purpose in Art or Math education. A scaled version of the original design will be printed and taken home.

Participants may bring their own computer for the workshop. A PC or Mac notebook less than 4 years old with capability for Internet access is ideal. We will provide usage of a Chromebook per team of 4 participants.

Participants are required to bring their own water bottle, snacks and lunch. Please note that only nut-free foods are allowed. Morning break (10:30-10:40am), lunch hour (12-1pm) and afternoon break (2:30-2:40pm) will be supervised.

We will be contacting each ticket purchaser to provide the name, age, gender, grade and special needs of the intended participants. Please leave us a valid email address where you can be contacted.
