Managing NonProfit Risk Confidently: Reasonably Protecting Your People, Reputation, and Liability

presented by David Hartley of nonprofithelp

Are you prepared? Like any other business sector, nonprofit organizations face risks that can threaten the bottom line and ultimately prevent you from carrying out your mission. Risk management is an ongoing process that should be integrated into all aspects of your organization's management; from assessing finances or insurance coverage to reviewing employment practices, training, and more. Developing a risk management plan is key to ensuring your organization is not caught off guard by unforeseen events or oversights.

Topics will include:

  • 14 Key Risk Categories (from Finance to Toxic staff/volunteers)
  • Critical legal concepts and 5 steps to protect your legal liability
  • How to find & prioritize your unique risks every 2 years
  • Simple, practical strategies to protect your people and reputation
  • Reasonable screening, key policies, more topics and resources
  • 8 questions to ask your insurance broker every year to ensure great coverage and price

David spent his professional life until the age of 40 in the world of risk and insurance, including over 7 years training insurance brokers, primarily for Co-operators and Aviva. David then directed the Insurance & Liability Resource Centre for Nonprofits for 5 years, funded by Ontario, a project of the national charity Imagine Canada. He now works as a consultant full-time assisting nonprofits and charities of all sizes across Canada. He has assisted over 20,000 nonprofit and charity leaders, hundreds of organizations, in over 140 Canadian cities and towns. David carries the Canadian Risk Management (C.R.M.) designation from the University of Toronto.
