About this Event

Keynote Speakers for this year:

Thursday: Dr. Wendy Weber (Fuchs)

Dr. Weber's research interests include multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), stress reduction strategies for students, and improving teacher effectiveness through explicit and inclusive instructional practices.

Wendy Weber, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where she teaches courses on mindfulness for wellbeing, and special education instructional methods. She works closely with schools on inclusive practices, continuous school improvement, and social emotional learning. She has notable experience teaching mindfulness to educators, K-12 students and college students. She has extensive training in vipassana (insight) meditation through Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Tara Brach and Jack Kornfield’s Mindfulness Meditation Teacher Certification Program (MMTCP). Dr. Weber has dedicated her personal and professional life to teaching mindfulness practices to others for self-empowerment and self-care. She has created a mindfulness curriculum for students, and is currently working on a book that provides practices on self-care for educators.

Friday: Dr. Michael Ungar

Systemic Approaches to Nurturing Resilience Among Children, Youth and Families with Complex Needs

When working with children, youth and families who experience the multiple challenges of addictions, mental health problems, and social marginalization (e.g., poverty, family violence, racism, and other factors), mental health services can have a greater influence when they focus less on problems and more on the factors that promote resilience. In this workshop, Dr. Michael Ungar will show that resilience is a process that is nurtured by service providers who match their interventions to their client’s needs, negotiating to make services both available and accessible in ways that people experience as culturally and contextually relevant. This workshop will present a social ecological approach to service design and delivery that makes mental health and addictions services strengths-focused and resistance-proof, drawing on the capacity of a client’s friends, family member, teachers and community as potential sources of support. Participants will learn how to identify and encourage seven factors associated with resilience: supportive relationships; a powerful identity; a sense of personal control, agency and power; social justice and fair treatment; belonging, purpose, and spirituality; and cultural rootedness. Michael will share both his research and stories from his clinical practice that illustrate what effective, ecologically complex services look like. Participants will have an opportunity to talk about examples of effective services from their own workplace, as well, and find solutions for clients who are difficult to engage. The core principles of the approach, navigation and negotiation, will be discussed in relation to several service design principles that combine clinical work with advocacy and case management to create effective services that clients value. Several themes will be discussed with regard to service design, including coordination of services across “silos”, continuity of services over time, the need for cultural sensitivity, and how services can show they are effective.

Morning Session (9:00 am to 11:45 am) & Afternoon Session (1:00 pm to 3:30 pm)

This year’s topics will be …

•Thursday: Dr. Weber's research interests include multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), stress reduction strategies for students, and improving teacher effectiveness through explicit and inclusive instructional practices.

•Friday: Dr. Unger I Still Love You: Nine Things Kids Need from their Parents, Caregivers, and Schools to Build Resilience

How can we show children we love them even when they push us away? How do we make children more resilient when they are angry, self-harming, anxious, abusive or delinquent? In this story-filled presentation, Dr. Michael Ungar provides nine practical strategies parents, caregivers and educators need to help young people of all ages heal, no matter a child’s emotional, psychological or behavioral problems. Based on material from his new book, I Still Love You, his clinical practice and his research around the world, Michael will share what families and schools have taught him about the power of unconditional love. Be prepared for an inspiring presentation. Michael’s words will help you understand the importance of the everyday heroics that change children’s lives, even when children’s parents, caregivers and educators are frustrated and unsure what to do next.
