Description

Living on the Edge: Taking a Look at Poverty
Presented by Mariah Baldwin, Community Involvement Manager, Workplace Engagement

Approximately 10 percent of Winnipeggers live in poverty and find themselves struggling every day to make ends meet. Poverty affects the lives of many of the students we teach every day. Participation in United Way Winnipeg’s Living on the Edge poverty simulation will help you gain insight into the complexity of poverty in our community and our schools.

“Living on the Edge: Taking a Look at Poverty” is a unique experience designed to provide a glimpse into what it might be like to live on a low income while trying to survive from month to month. During the simulation, most participants are placed in households, each with a story that describes their financial situation. The simulation is divided into four short “weeks”, representing a month in total. Each week the family needs to perform day to day tasks including sending their children to school (or childcare), getting to or finding work, paying bills, visiting social services or other community agencies, buying groceries, cashing their cheques, and more. Random participants will be chosen to fulfill the roles of community resource staff, services the “families” are involved with. For these roles a brief training will take place immediately prior to the commencement of the simulation. Following the simulation, participants will debrief the experience and learn more about the role United Way Winnipeg is playing in addressing poverty.

In describing the simulation, participants have used words such as “eye-opening”, “meaningful”, and “informative”. They speak about gaining a greater understanding of the obstacles faced by those living in poverty and the difficulties many face when trying to change their circumstances.

In order to accommodate as many participants as possible, the simulation will run twice morning and afternoon sessions are planned.

Our day provides a dual purpose; a unique experience which gives participants the opportunity to take part in the life of those living in low income situations, as well as the time to reflect and complete some self-directed professional development. In addition to being registered for our fantastic half day poverty simulation registrants will be directed to professional development activities throughout our city, which they can access on their open half day.
