Description

Dear Friends of Millennium Arts Salon and The Phillips Collection:

In conjunction with the exhibition The Warmth of Other Suns: Stories of Global Displacement which is on view through September 22, The Phillips Collection has also created a slate of dynamic programming including artist talks. Notably, on August 29, Millennium Arts Salon Executive Director Juanita Hardy will be featured in a Salon Talk and Panel Discussion on the issues of migration and displacement raised by the exhibition.

Also, in his volunteer role with The Phillips Collection (TPC), Mel has been appointed as an Outreach Partner to Special Communities. Foundational to its principles and assertively promoted by the museum’s expanded leadership team, TPC has a dedicated mission of addressing contemporary social justice issues of global significance. The museum's undertaking of this extraordinary exhibition on the urgent topic of immigration and the global migration crisis entitled: The Warmth of Other Suns: Stories of Global Displacement, presents 75 historical and contemporary artists—from the United States as well as Algeria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, Egypt, Ghana, Iraq, Lebanon, Mexico, Morocco, Syria, Turkey, UK, Vietnam, and more—whose work poses urgent questions around the experiences and perceptions of migration, internal and cross-border displacement, and the current global refugee crisis. Mel will lead a tour on September 7th from 11 to 1 with the sharing of coffee directly afterwards to discuss your impressions.

Some questions: What do you think about the issue? Is there any impact on your life? On your family? On your community? The exhibition is designed as a humanitarian exposition of the matter of migration and displacement... Are there linkages between the experiences that you might have and the issues raised by the exhibition? Can the exhbition catalyze emotions of empathy and compassion for loved ones who may be so affected by circumstance? For fellow humans not directly connected to us? "Let's get after it!"

Please join us for both events. Equally importantly, spend time at the museum exploring your own sensibilities raised by the exhibition at this moment in our American geo-political history.
