Speaker: Timothy Gordon, MSW, RSW is a social worker in Canada, award winning author, and internationally recognized peer-reviewed ACT trainer. He specializes in treating attachment and trauma related disorders. Tim is also a yoga teacher who integrates movement and yoga practices into his work. Tim’s research has included yoga as a mental health intervention, ACT for chronic pain, and ACT with neonatal intensive care units. Tim is the co-author of the The ACT Approach, a comprehensive guide to ACT, The ACT Deck, a collection of 55 brief ACT practices for therapists and clients, and the Acceptance & Mindfulness Toolbox for Children and Adolescents, a guide to using ACT and other third-wave approaches with young people and their families. Visit Tim’s Website: www.TheZenSocialWorker.ca

Workshop Description: Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) is celebrated as a process-based approach that unlike most evidence-based interventions is not defined in terms of scientifically validated protocols focused on syndromes. Instead, ACT is a model of psychological flexibility that encourages clinicians to bring their full selves, including their clinical wisdom to integrate methods into an evidence-based therapy that focuses on what works. Simultaneously, this frees clinicians to treat clinical populations transdiagnostically, treating underlying processes rather than symptoms yet also makes ACT difficult to master.

This workshop fills the gap between learning ACT and mastering ACT in your moment to moment clinical work. Through grounding yourself in ACT processes rather than fostering reliance on techniques, you will learn a stance of openness, curiosity, and equality from the ACT therapist stance. You will be encouraged to adapt ACT and practice in a supportive workshop environment with a focus on developing new skills and challenging ourselves to be creative and experiential in our work.

For those who have not had formal training in ACT Tim thought they would be good to go if they read at least the intro to Tim’s book The ACT Approach, watched the free video :What is ACT and How to Do It: https://youtu.be/PmKEvlv9Cys, and could look at the free course Tim offers at Praxis: https://www.praxiscet.com/events/introduction-to-act/
