Description

A bootcamp for investing in social and environmental enterprises

Every dollar you invest should make a difference to the causes you care about.

On March 20, join MaRS Centre for Impact Investing at Maximizing Impact – an afternoon workshop about investing in social enterprises that are changing the world for the better.

A new generation of entrepreneurs is breaking down the barriers between doing business and doing good. They’re creating companies that are making a profit, while taking on some of the toughest social and environmental problems we face.

Learn how to spot and make investments in the most promising social enterprises – from the angel and early-stage investors who are already doing them.

What you’ll learn

We'll explore some key questions over the course of the afternoon.

Why invest in a social enterprise?

Hear from two angel investors and the entrepreneurs they invested in. On the panel: John Doherty and Gavin Armstrong (Lucky Iron Fish) and Tom Rand and Curtis VanWalleghem (Hydrostor).

How can you find the best deals and manage a portfolio?

Venture capital investors Bonnie Foley-Wong (Pique Ventures) and Kathryn Wortsman (MaRS Catalyst Fund) will explain how to source, vet and manage early-stage deals in social impact ventures. Vanessa Grant (Norton Rose Fulbright) will discuss investment structures and legal considerations to early-stage investing.

What’s on the market?

Entrepreneurs building innovative companies explain their business models, traction and vision.

How do you assess whether your investments are making a difference?

Learn how to assess the impact of your portfolio from Olivia Prentice, Manager of the impact+ program at Bridges Ventures, the world's leading specialist fund manager dedicated to sustainable and impact investment.

Due diligence workshop

Towards the end of the afternoon, you'll have the opportunity to sit down with our guest entrepreneurs to emulate a traditional, initial venture-investor conversation. Rotate through a number of tables to gain insights from a variety of entrepreneurs with differing experiences.

Evening book launch

Plus – Stay on for the evening book launch* of ‘Integrated Investing: Impact Investing with Head, Heart, Body and Soul’ by Bonnie Foley-Wong.

Share a drink with other impact investors in the MaRS Café and hear Bonnie Foley-Wong, founder of Pique Ventures, discuss her new book.

Who should attend?

Active and potential investors who are looking for ways to diversify their social impact with high-potential ventures.

Individuals, foundations, and representatives are all welcome at the event.

Spaces are limited. Sign up today.

*Note that you can sign up for the book launch when you register for this event. You don't need to register again on their event page. The book launch will take place between 6:00–8:00 p.m.
