Planning for capital efficiency – in strategy and in practice

Has our industry learned from the previous ‘up’ cycle? As commodity prices rise again, will our industry prioritize return on capital, or pursue growth at all costs? The last market cycle strongly rewarded mining companies with the ability to create value through growth projects while also exhibiting capital discipline. These companies demonstrated an ability to invest in the most promising projects, while maintaining a strong balance sheet – attracting further investment capital, or putting them in a position to expand their project pipeline through acquisition.

Our industry reinvests a significant amount of cash flow back into our projects and operations. Recent media coverage of investor presentations and equity analyst research highlights the importance of managing capital investment in mining. It is undeniable that there is significant value to be created, or destroyed, by our capital planning processes. How can we better compete for capital through more effective project studies and strategic planning practices?

This discussion will look to answer these questions through several practical and implementable approaches to driving effective capital planning. It will highlight best practices for identifying, studying, evaluating, managing the risk of and justifying capital projects.
