Diagnosed with PTSD in 2003; Christian’s greatest obstacle was not necessarily the effects of PTSD but more the stigma attached to it at a time when even the military was struggling with the effects of PTSD and other injuries due to operations in Afghanistan. The world just a few years earlier had experienced the tragic events of 9/11 in New York. Where an unprecedented and tragic event occurred that took the lives of thousands of civilians, as well as responding firefighters, police, EMS and security staff. This would serve as a catalyst in many ways not only for the physical health but also the mental health of those who responded; survivors, and families in the months, years ahead and to this day.

Today PTSD is widely acknowledged as a mental health concern. It is however still a misunderstood condition that often only receives attention when a person with PTSD has done something tragic such as suicide or murder suicide; assault, domestic violence, or driving while impaired. This makes acknowledgement or even a conversation about PTSD even more difficult.

PTSD is not going to go away. There is no inoculation for the mind. As world events especially in the realm of terrorism continue; the effects of PTSD on civilians and those that respond will only rise. More civilians than ever before are being diagnosed with PTSD. Recent events for example that have involved mass shootings will eventually lead to mental health issues; such as PTSD for those directly involved and those who responded; their family and friends. This is inevitable.

The time for discussion is now.

It is time to Break the Silence.
