The City of Mississauga is the 6th largest city in Canada, representing over 760,000 people with over 70 Fortune 500 companies and 140,000 businesses. It is a prosperous, diverse and growing city with immense potential for our bright, young and talented minds. Despite this, youth unemployment rates have been on the rise since the global recession hit in 2008.
In Peel, the unemployment rate among youth 15-24 is higher than the national average - 17% in the third quarter of 2014, compared to 14% nationally. This represents more than 32,000 young people and it is anticipated that youth unemployment rates will continue to climb as more young people are entering the job market than ever before.
In a City as affluent and rich in opportunity, we can and should do better. The Mayor's Youth Employment Expo seeks to connect youth to businesses currently looking to fill full-time, part-time and seasonal positions now and in the near future, in addition to those seeking youth for paid internships, volunteer opportunities and co-op placements. Our goal is simple – creating mutually beneficial connections between talented youth in search of employment and local businesses in need of talented youth.
