Interested in representing McMaster at the 2017 Canadian University Chess Tournament at Western next year? Want to play for the McMaster team? The McMaster Chess Club is holding a qualifying tournament on December 3, 2016 for two open spots on McMaster’s team. McMaster annually sends two teams of 4 to the Canadian tournament, where we compete against other Ontario and Quebec Universities. Typically, positions on the team are ranked based off of strength (1A is the strongest player, 2A is the second strongest, etc.). General ratings for each position are outlined in the list of current standings. The winners of this year’s McMaster tournament will be able to play boards 3B (rating about 1600) and 4B (rating about 1500). Lastly, current positions held by individuals in the standings may be challenged (best of 3 matches, 15 minutes, no increment time control) for a place on the team. However, challengers must be confident that they are of equal or greater skill level to the ratings outlined beside each board. NOTE: If you choose to challenge a board, you will NOT be able to participate in the qualifying tournament (since this is for lower ranking team positions). Each challenger may only challenge ONE of the current boards ONE time. After signing up, a confirmation email, along with a designated time slot, will be sent to you. Please indicate by selecting the appropiate Eventbrite ticket whether you will be a challenger (along with which board you are challenging) or a tournament participant.
