Under the spotlight is where we grant attention towards people, ideas, issues or objects. We live in an era where giving the spotlight to everyone and everything is simply impossible. Numerous areas of digital media often exist outside mainstream media despite highly contributing to the growth of technology. How do we ensure that vital technological innovations do not slip our radar? What platforms can help these innovations grow despite not receiving the spotlight?

We live in an era where the ideal notion of success is often perceived as not only receiving financial freedom, but fame and recognition. In the fast-paced world of startups, individuals are taking their own reigns in carving out their own access to the spotlight with new ideas that challenge the way we currently live including our digital interactions. However, we must question whether a business venture and technological innovation is simply valuable on the virtue of receiving the spotlight.

This year’s showcase places a spotlight on digital media innovations that are outside of mainstream focus, which challenge the status quo of how we consume and share information. Numerous innovations do not receive the spotlight even though they have the potential to dramatically change our digital interactions and ways of living. This year’s cohort strived to place a spotlight on technological innovations with unique ways of consuming digital media and demonstrating that looking beyond the spotlight for innovation is as equally as important as looking within it.

LEARN MORE ABOUT MDM 6.0!

With so much possibility and creativity, the showcase of our cohort has been divided into the following 6 different avenues:

AUGMENTED & VIRTUAL REALITY

Get ready to interact with cutting edge technology in the market that involve changing the face of conventional gaming and storytelling interaction. Are you interested in how five players can simultaneously play a virtual reality game with only one headset? Or perhaps how augmented reality can help transform experience of conducting research on archival museum objects? Then augmented & virtual reality is right down your alley with our Graduates redefining the way augmented and virtual reality can help shape different experiences.

PHYSICAL COMPUTING

Ever wondered how a robot can transform the experience of creating visual art? Or how a curated musical experience and lighting therapy can be controlled by a multisensory panel? The physical computing stream may just be of interest to you. Machine learning and robotic interaction can transform the user experience through engaging with human senses from vision, acoustic, touch, taste, smell, proprioception – physical sense of self movement. This stream involves students bringing forth innovative and non-conventional ways of how machines can guide us through different multi-sensory experiences.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Entrepreneurs can consist of anyone including engineers, photographers, web and graphic designers. This year’s cohort has created their own ventures based on providing efficient solutions to ongoing problems city-wide. This includes changing the way we access spaces including studios to challenging the traditional dating experience set forth by mainstream apps. These graduates have grown their businesses from creating transformative ideas to validating their target market. This stream may be up your alley if you are looking to interact with risk takers with a taste for changing the current startup landscape.

INTERACTIVE MEDIA

Many of our Graduates have taken their projects from the ideation phase and wireframing to creating live demos of their projects that can function in different environments from mobile devices to interactive installations. This stream may be of your interest if you want to observe some creative demos and live stream documentations that involve the user having a prominent role in shaping their individual digital experience. These graduates have strived to incorporate user-centered experiences that are focused on dynamic and unique UX/UI design.

EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY

Technological innovations are heavily changing the field of education and learning processes among different demographics of students. Are you interested in how artificial intelligence and mindfulness can be incorporated into the process of studying? Or perhaps how augmented reality can transform the process of learning photography and videography? Witness our Graduates demonstrating new avenues in using technology to revolutionize the way upcoming generations will learn whether that be in a classroom setting or outside in the park.

ACCESSIBILITY

A highly pertinent issue today, Graduates in this stream are addressing accessibility issues that are not often addressed in the mainstream media and how technological innovations can be used to make experiences more inclusive for everyone. Witness cutting edge ideas on how our perception of accessibility can be further expanded and accommodated in everyday environments from the workplace to cafes. This is definitely an insightful stream if you are a designer, engineer, or product manager looking to be educated on creating inclusive environments and products.
