A one day lecture/demonstration with renowned artist Stephen Broomer.

About this Event

Join artist Stephen Broomer for this one day lecture/demonstration where participants will learn a brief history of material hybrid forms in experimental filmmaking. Participants will explore techniques related to the plastic manipulation of film and the resonance of these techniques in contemporary digital tools.

Stephen Broomer will discuss the basic handling of programs like Adobe Premiere and After Effects to explore the plasticity of images; no experience with these programs is required. Primary skills discussed will include basic keyframe animation of scale, transparency, time and exploring opacity and blending modes. Participants will learn about the historical use of optical printers in experimental filmmaking and the ways in which these instruments can influence a contemporary digital workflow.

About the instructor

Stephen Broomer is a filmmaker and film preservationist. His work has screened at IFFR, TIFF, the San Francisco Cinematheque and Anthology Film Archives. He is the author of Hamilton Babylon: A History of the McMaster Film Board (University of Toronto Press, 2016) and Codes for North: Foundations of the Canadian avant-garde film (CFMDC, 2017). In 2020, he will be a visiting Fulbright scholar at the University of California Santa Cruz.

Are you a Cineworks member? We are seeking 3 volunteers to assist with the set-up, facilitation & pack-down of this event. Volunteers will gain access to the workshop for free and worked hours will go towards the fulfilment of their mandatory membership volunteer hours.
