Description

Medical Cannabis: Past and Present

Recreational cannabis will be legalized on October 17th, 2018.The wide spread availability of cannabis will inevitably lead to an increase in consumption by the public, and there is an urgency to provide evidenced based knowledge

What are the legal implications for an employee, patient and employer?
Are you aware of the differences between recreational and medical cannabis?
What are the side effects associated with cannabis usage?

All of these questions and many more will be answered on Nov. 2, 2018 at the University of Calgary. Reforming Education on Drugs (RED) and KannaVolve have collaborated to bring a breadth of cannabis knowledge by a highly experienced group of professionals. Through a presentation and panel discussion, we are looking to provide students, faculty, and community members with up-to-date knowledge on cannabis, and to address any pressing concerns, and give you the opportunity to ask questions.

Presenters and Topics

1) Knowing you rights? Legal implications.

John Gilmore, Employment Law, Bennett Jones LLP

2) Medical Cannabis 101. How it works in your body. Clinical efficacy and safety.

Dr. Craig Pearce, Clinical Anesthesiologist, AHS

3) Cannabis in the workplace? What does that mean for an employer patient or recreational user?

Dr. Riz Qureshi, Clinical Associate Family Oncology, Tom Baker Cancer Center

It is clear that there are varied opinions on cannabis. Considering the widespread controversy on cannabis use, contradicting information is widely available to the public. We understand that is difficult to pick and choose between the varying sources, especially if there is a bias in place. In order to begin to address these inconsistencies, a lawyer at a prestigious law firm will discuss the legalities behind cannabis legalization. After establishing the laws surrounding cannabis, we will then seek to address the medical inconsistencies with the biological effects of cannabis on the body and its role in a clinical setting, as well asin the workplace. Medical doctors who directly interact with medical cannabis patients and are aware of the undergoing novel research concerning these topics will address these concerns.
