Medical Marijuana in the Workplace

Legal access to dried marijuana for medical purposes was first provided in 1999 under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA), leading to the implementation of the Marijuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) in 2001. The way individuals access cannabis for medical purposes is changing. As of August 24, 2016, the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) came into effect and replaces the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR) and if the current proposed Cannabis Act is approved by Parliament, recreational marijuana use will likely become law by Canada Day, 2018. Employers are should be examining their policies and may face challenges with respect to potential conflict between their duty to accommodate employees and reasonable precaution to ensure the safety of their workplaces.

Join us on June 9th for Medical Marijuana in the Workplace, where Amanda Daley will review the definition of Medical Marijuana, its clinical applications and what it can do for patients. The presentation will include a summary of Health Canada’s Medical Marijuana Regulations and highlight the impact of those regulations on Health Care Professionals, the Employer, the Worker, and Safety in the Workplace. Amanda will also discuss the anticipated impact on the medical cannabis system if recreational marijuana becomes legal as expected.

Amanda Daley is Vice President, Medical at Canopy Growth Corporation, parent company of Tweed, Mettrum and Bedrocan, licensed producers of medical cannabis. Amanda oversees the medical strategy for Canopy including the medical sales team, the medical advisory board, and the creation and implementation of continuing medical education (CME) for healthcare professionals.

Before joining Tweed, Amanda spent 15 years in the pharmaceutical industry in companies both big and small. She held various positions in sales and medical education, most recently as Regional Manager, Health Education for Pfizer Canada, where she focused primarily on the company’s pain portfolio.

Amanda’s professional passion is using science and needs-based, quality education to bridge knowledge gaps with healthcare professionals. A proud Atlantic Canadian with roots in Nova Scotia, she lives outside Ottawa where she enjoys spending
