About this Event

Grab a beverage, join a conversation and chat with the speakers who presented at GlycoNet/ACS Joint Webinar Series. Ask them anything from science-related questions to career-oriented advices!

If you missed their webinars, do not worry — selective presentations will be available on our YouTube Channel.

Who you are meeting:

Dr. Mary Cloninger

Professor, Montana State University

Prof. Mary J. Cloninger is a professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montana State University. Her research is focused on chemical biology and in particular on the protein-carbohydrate interactions at the cell surface that are important for cell-cell interactions. She is particularly interested in studying the role of galectin-3, a carbohydrate-binding protein that is overexpressed during many processes in cancer progression. Her research involves the synthesis and study of synthetic multivalent frameworks such as dendrimers with carbohydrate endgroups. Prof. Cloninger obtained her Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1996) with Prof. Howard Whitlock. After spending two semesters in Prof. Perry Frey’s lab in the Enzyme Institute at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1996-1997), she was a California President’s Postdoctoral Fellow in Prof. Larry Overman’s group at the University of California-Irvine (1997-1999) before joining the faculty at Montana State University in 1999. She served as Department Head for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Montana State from 2012-2018. She has received numerous awards and recognitions including earning an NSF CAREER award (2001) and the MSU Honors College Distinguished Faculty Award (2019).

Dr. Pumtiwitt McCarthy

Associate Professor, Morgan State University

Dr. Pumtiwitt McCarthy is an Associate Professor in the Chemistry Department of Morgan State University and currently serves as Chair of the Maryland section of the American Chemical Society. Dr. McCarthy has established an interdisciplinary research program that investigates carbohydrate-producing enzymes from Neisseria meningitidis for the development of improved vaccines and the production of new bio-based tools for remediation of heavy metals in water. Currently, her research is funded by the National Institutes of Health and a technology transfer grant from Morgan State University.

Dr. McCarthy joined Morgan State University as an Assistant Professor in 2013 and became an Associate Professor with tenure in 2019. Before beginning her independent career, Dr. McCarthy was an ORISE and NIH PRAT postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Willie Vann at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research at the FDA (2009-2013). She obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Delaware (2009) and a B.S. in Biochemistry from Rowan University (2003).
