Local Cheese Tour & Tasting
Vancouver Farmers Markets is hosting local cheese tasting tours in celebration of Earth Day! Meet the makers themselves and learn about goat (Chevres, Gozzarella, St. George, Caerphilly, Blue Caprina, Feta & more), cow (Gouda, Lady Jane, Rathtrevor, Bleu Claire, Curds...) and sheep (Montana) cheeses. Discover what to look for in surface-ripened, hard, aged and fresh cheeses and who carries which kinds. Each tour meets at the Market Information Booth, visits four cheese makers and runs for about 40 minutes.
Tours run rain or shine - April 20 @ 11:30am & 12:30pm.
Meet the Makers
Little Qualicum Cheeseworks produces a selection of cheeses made of the high quality milk from their own herd of dairy cows just outside of Parksville on Vancouver Island. If you like them at the market, you can also visit the farm!
Salt Spring Island Cheese make goat and sheep milk cheeses on Salt Spring Island where they believe that a better kind of food business is one that reflects both good community and good food. Best known for their chevres, they also produce feta cheeses, surface-ripened cheeses and even a hard cheese.
Goat's Pride Dairy at McLennan Creek is a family-owned and operated organic goat dairy producing milk, yogurt, and various artisan cheeses. Located in the Fraser Valley, they make goat cheeses that range from Blue Caprina to Gozzarella!
The Farm House Natural Cheeses uses the rich fresh milk of their farm's own cows and goats to make a wide variety of farmstead artisan cheeses. Their head cheese-maker, Debra Amrein-Boyes is part of the Guide des Fromagers Confrerie de Saint-Uguzon which recognizes those who protect and continue the tradition of cheesemaking around the world.
