Description

Do you tell involuntary patients their rights as part of your job?

You’re invited to participate in a focus group and training session to:

  • give your opinions about what might improve the rights-advice process as part of a focus group
  • learn about a new set of communication tools to supplement Form 13
  • ask any questions you have about the Mental Health Act

This session is designed to be an open house, which should let you attend during your break: each of these three components takes 15 minutes, and we will rotate through them throughout the three-hour open house.

You are free to join at the start of any 15-minute segment. We encourage you to stay for three consecutive segments to get the full content and the opportunity to express your opinions about rights advice.

The lunch-and-learn will take place on Tuesday, June 12, noon–3 pm, in conference room 1C13.

We will serve a light lunch.

This focus group and training session is part of a research project by PhD student Iva Cheung (SFU), under the supervision of Dr. Erin Michalak (UBC). They will ask you to fill out a brief survey before and after the session for their research, and your opinions in the focus group will be used to develop recommendations for the rights-advice process.

When you turn in your survey after the session, you will receive a $5 Starbucks gift card as thanks. Please allow 5 minutes before you join the session to complete the study consent form and pre-session survey, or fill out them out beforehand and bring them to the session to save some time. (We will assign you a participant code when you arrive.)

Registration is not required, but it is encouraged so that we know how much food we’ll need. You are also encouraged to submit your Mental Health Act questions in advance so that we can consult our research team’s legal expert before the session. You can submit quesitons when you register, or you can send them to Amy Byrne at Amy.Byrne@vch.ca or Iva Cheung at ivac@sfu.ca.

For more information about what the session will involve, please refer to the study's consent form.

If you have questions about the session, contact Amy Byrne, Clinical Nurse Educator, UBC Hospital, at Amy.Byrne@vch.ca/604-827-1345 or Iva Cheung, PhD student, at ivac@sfu.ca/778-230-0205.
