Join SCREEN for an informative day focused on supporting people from different cultures to manage their chronic conditions when they are also facing mental health challenges. Guest speakers and workshop leaders from a variety of backgrounds will share their expertise and knowledge with you!

9:10 - Presentation: Crossing cultures to help with depression and anxiety

  • BounceBack www.bouncebackontario.ca provides self-help workbooks, videos and telephone coaching for people across Ontario dealing with depression or anxiety.
  • A BounceBack coach with lived experience of another language and culture will share the program’s experience with supporting people across cultures:
    • working with a diverse coaching staff
    • using standardized health assessment tools with clients from a variety of cultures
    • adapting client materials
    • coaching across cultures
  • Presented by Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario Division and South Simcoe Branch

1:00 - Interactive Workshop - Supporting immigrants’ and refugees’ mental health

(An interactive workshop for those providing physical and/or mental health care)

  • Facilitated by Aamna Ashraf of The Immigrant and Refugee Mental Health Project at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, which offers on-line courses for health care professionals. See https://irmhp-psmir.camhx.ca/
  • Topics include:
    • Trauma- informed care when working with immigrants and refugees
      • Including self-care for the health care provider
    • Special populations of immigrants and refugees - vulnerable sub groups
    • Myths – what are our assumptions around these populations?
    • Ways to assist and knowing when it is time to refer people on
