Event description

Description

Have you ever been in a situation where a member has broken down in the middle of a class with a panic attack with no clue what to do? Or perhaps you have a friend or family member that has been struggling with depression and you're not sure how to support them. If this sounds like you, taking Mental Health First Aid might be the next step in becoming a more competent gym owner, coach, parent, friend etc.

Offered through the Mental Health Commission of Canada, Mental Health First Aid is a two-day course (Saturday & Sunday) that focuses on the four most common mental health disorders including substance related, mood related, anxiety and trauma related, and psychotic disorders. Participants who take this course are well prepared to interact confidently about mental health with their members, family, friends, communities, and workplaces. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive a certificate of acknowledgement from the Mental Health Commission of Canada and will be certified as a Mental Health First Aider

What you learn:

- Mental health and stigma

- Signs & Symptoms of mental health problems including substance-related disorders, mood disorders (i.e. bipolar & depression), anxiety disorders & psychotic disorders

- Effective, evidence-based intervention methods

- Resources & supports

Why take it?

There is a tremendous amount of stigma associated with mental health problems. Taking an MHFA courses reduces social distance between the participant and someone experiencing a mental health problem. One person in five will experience a mental health problem this year. Evidence shows that MHFA course participants increase their awareness of signs and symptoms of the most common mental health problems. The most difficult part of intervening is knowing what to say. Taking an MHFA course increases the confidence participants have in engaging someone experiencing a mental health problem or crisis.

To complete registration, please e-transfer admission fees ($185.00) to jordana.romany@gmail.com
