Description

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a two day interactive course with a focus on adults with mental health problems. Practical skills are taught using a model that is easy to apply in real life settings. Previous experience dealing with mental health issues is not required.

Please note: These workshops are open only to current McMaster Staff and Faculty.

This MHFA training will help you to:

  • Recognize and understand the symptoms of mental health problems, including those related to substance use.
  • Provide help and support to prevent a mental health problem from developing into a more serious state.
  • Promote the recovery of good mental health by accommodating employees in distress or recovering from a crisis.
  • Become aware of McMaster and other community based resources.

Upon completion you will become a certified Mental Health First Aid Provider, as designated by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. In order to receive your certificate, full attendance and participation in the 2-day course is required.

What are the costs involved?

This program is funded by McMaster University for current McMaster Faculty and Staff. Participants are not required to make up the time away from their role to participate in this training. Parking fees are the responsibility of the participant (or their department).

What are the attendance & cancellation fees for the program?

Attendance at this program is of critical importance. Registered participants must attend and participate in both program days. Mental Health First Aid Canada will not issue a certificate of completion if attendance requirements are not met. A department may be billed a cancellation fee ($100) if a participant misses a full day. The programs are highly interactive and full participation benefits everyone in the cohort.

Those who cancel their registration within seven calendar days or less of the program start date will have an administrative fee ($100) billed to their department unless the spot can be filled by an individual on our waiting list.

Note: A minimum number of participants is required for the course to take place. The course may be rescheduled with minimal notice should there be insufficient attendance.

All withdrawal notifications must be submitted via email to Stacie Cameron at venns@mcmaster.ca.
