Mental Health, Suicide Prevention, and MAID in Patients with Chronic Pain

This symposium aims to provide healthcare professionals with an evidence-based overview of mental health issues associated with suicidality in patients with chronic pain, as well as practical strategies that can be used by health care workers on the front lines.

Course Objectives:

At the end of this symposium, learners will be familiar with:

  • Mental health factors associated with suicide risk in patients with chronic pain

  • Trauma-informed strategies for speaking with clients who are suicidal

  • The difference between suicide and medical assistance in dying (MAID)

  • Consideration of ethical dilemmas when working with suicidal patients who have pain

  • Resources and appropriate referral criteria for clients who have expressed that they are suicidal

Who Should Attend:

Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, psychologists, social workers, allied health professionals, and other front line staff.

Logistics:

This educational opportunity will occur on Thursday June 20, 2019 at the Richmond Road Diagnostic and Treatment Centre (RRDTC) located at 1820 Richmond Road SW, in the fourth floor solarium.

Registration 1200 - 1230h

Symposium: 1230-1615h

Metered parking can be accessed on the west side of the building and there are AHS designated reciprocal spots if you hold the proper placard or have a temporary reciprocal pass from your home unit. Please avoid parking underground as this area is designated for outpatients who visit this site with ambulatory issues. RRDTC Parking Maps can be located here.

The RRDTC site offers a small cafeteria on the main level where you can purchase your food and beverage requirements during the day. Please be mindful of their operation hours which are from 0700-1400hrs daily. Food and beverages will not be provided.
