Mental Tools in Sport Series
There are many psychological demands placed on athletes in competition. In order for an athlete to properly prepare for performance, regulate their thoughts and emotions in a game, and remain calm under pressure, they will be required to use skills that extend beyond the physical aspect of their sport. PacificSport VI will be hosting a series of workshops focusing on mental tools athletes can use to enhance their athletic performance.
Imagery – November 9, 2016
Imagery, or the ability to create or re-create an experience in one’s mind, is a powerful tool for mental performance. When an athlete rehearses a play in their head, creates a highlight reel of images to prepare themselves to play, or goes to a calming image in their mind to control their nerves, they are using imagery skills to cope with the demands of their sport. The goal of imagery is to recreate what it feels like to play sport. The more vivid these images are, the more prepared the athlete will be to face the mental challenges within the game. This workshop will provide education on how imagery can be applied to optimize sport performance.
Self-Talk & Confidence – January 11
Self-talk, the steady stream of thoughts and internal dialogue in one’s mind, has a massive influence on an athlete’s performance. When used with a purpose, self-talk can be a versatile and powerful tool to help athletes in pressure filled moments. While self-talk happens constantly, it becomes more frequent in the most important competitions. This workshop will explain how self-talk works, how to recognize the difference between positive and negative thinking, and how athletes can use positive self-talk as a tool to build their confidence and enhance their performance.
Relaxation & Energization – February 8
Athletes are always striving for ways to manage their optimal “performance zone” when playing their sport. At times, the pressure of the moment can take over causing athletes to suffer under the pressure of an intense game situation, such as when taking a free throw or penalty shot. At other times, athletes can feel lethargic and sluggish, which prevents them from pushing through the fatigue barrier and allows opponents to overrun them due to their lack of energy. Relaxation and energization are mental tools that can be used to combat these adverse situations. This workshop will provide tips for athletes to better manage their energy levels for the various challenges they are faced with in their sport.
