Event description

Description

Join WISE for our Mentor of the Month talk by Dr. Heather Sheardown, "The Joys and Perils of Working with Industry".

Discovery based research represents an important component of the research portfolio of most academic researchers. However, more and more academics are looking to industry to support their research programs and supplement the work that is being done in fundamental science. Dr. Sheardown has deliberately chosen to make industry supported research a significant component of the work that she conducts. In this talk, she will discuss the challenges and rewards that this brings, including the challenges and highlights around starting a company to allow for the commercialization of research that has come out of her lab.

Dr. Sheardown is a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at McMaster University. She holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair Ophthalmic Biomaterials and Drug Delivery Systems and is an expert in drug delivery, contact lens materials, IOLs, polymer chemistry, and bioengineering in the ophthalmic space.

All students and faculty are welcome. Light lunch and refreshments will be served.
