Event Details

Mentorship Hours is a program designed to help early-stage founders who are about to go to market or are currently in market connect with local entrepreneurs who have "been there, done that". Our mentors will provide advice on specific topics ranging from Growing a Team to Protecting Yourself (IP). Each slot is scheduled for a 20-minute conversation.

August 14th - Protecting Yourself (IP) with Joseph Turcotte from IP Osgoode

Joseph is the Coordinator of the IP Osgoode Innovation Clinic, where he helps educate entrepreneurs, creators, and innovators about the importance of intellectual property (IP) for their business growth. The IP Osgoode Innovation Clinic is a needs-based innovation-to-market legal clinic operated in collaboration with Innovation York and Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP. At the Innovation Clinic, Joseph helps guide individual inventors and entrepreneurs as well as start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, and scale up companies to improve their IP knowledge and savviness so that they can recognize, protect, and commercialize their IP.

Joseph holds a PhD from the York & Ryerson Joint Graduate Program in Communication & Culture (Politics & Policy). He researches and publishes extensively on how IP, knowledge/information and data are developed and commercialized in the knowledge-based, digital economy.

Note: IP Osgoode Innovation Clinic Staff and Fellows do not provide legal advice. Innovation Clinic Fellows work under the supervision of practicing lawyers to provide IP information to our clients. The IP Osgoode Innovation Clinic operates in accordance with the relevant rules and regulations of the Law Society of Ontario.

August 15th - Social Media Marketing with Laurie Baker from Treefrog

August 27th - Bootstrapping 101 with Jessica Rawlley from TieIT Inc.

Jessica Rawlley is the Co-Founder of TieiT, a leading edge business collaboration solution. TieiT is changing the way businesses operate by helping them improve efficiency, team collaboration and capturing important data to increase conversions. TieiT is made up of all essential modules that any business needs from sales, marketing, billing, scheduling and more, all under one, powerful and easy to use application.

August 28th - Public Relations 101 with Stephanie Greenall from Mothership Agency Inc.

Stephanie isn’t afraid of getting dirty. As the Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Mothership--a design and communications agency--she believes the best way to partner with clients is by getting in the trenches with them. It may be an unconventional approach to understanding the inner workings of her clients and their business, but it fosters an important partnership and builds mutual trust.

From healthcare to virtual reality, fashion to fast food, Stephanie has worked with a variety of industries and enjoys uncovering the people and communities that are touched by these brands.

When she’s not tied to her laptop, you can find her enjoying horror movies, a peaceful yoga class, or indulging in too much poutine!

August 29th - Growing a Team with Emily Chung from AutoNiche Inc.

Emily is a proud mom of two energetic young boys. She owns and operates AutoNiche, a family-friendly auto repair shop in Markham. She is a licensed Automotive Service Technician, Certified Child Car Seat Technician, and Automotive Writer with various publications. She also teaches in the Automotive Business School of Canada at Georgian College. Emily holds a degree from the University of Waterloo in Psychology and Business, and her previous jobs include Psychometrist and Human Resources Associate.

She has appeared on various media including Breakfast Television, Cityline, and the Marilyn Denis Show. She is passionate about her work; together with her staff, AutoNiche’s purpose is to bring better communication and client service to the auto repair experience.

YSpace Markham & Startup York

YSpace is York University’s newest community innovation hub located at the heart of Downtown Markham. We help build great companies by connecting them with high-end equipment, access to capital and a network of influencers and entrepreneurs. We are creating a vibrant physical hub that encourages creativity and bridges the gap between large enterprises and startups within the York Region ecosystem.

Startup York is a non-profit community of entrepreneurs in York Region.  We host no-pitch events for entrepreneurs to meet and share.  We also connect businesses with organizations who can help them grow.  If you own a small to mid-size business, a tech startup, a solopreneur, or are thinking about starting a business, we'd love to meet you!
