Learn the basics of Metal working in this Metal Shop + MIG Welding Course at Makerspace!

About this event

This is a 2 part course!

December Class Dates

PART 1 - Friday, Dec 17, 6 - 8 pm

PART 2 - Saturday, Dec 18, 9 - 1 pm

January and onwards classes will be 1 day, 9am-3pm

In this combined metal shop and welding workshop, participants will have an opportunity to learn safe operation of a variety of tools in order to complete a desk organizer project. Upon successful completion of the workshop, participants should be able to:

- Safely operate the metal band saw, bench grinder, drill press, angle grinder, and MIG welding

- Inspect, set up, and perform cuts using the metal band saw

- De-burr and clean edges of their work piece using the bench grinder

- Set up, including setting speed and fastening the work piece, and perform drilling operations using the drill press

- Selecting the appropriate abrasive and use the angle grinder

- Perform proper start up and shut down procedures for the MIG welder

- Perform inside, outside, flat, angled ,corner welds using the MIG welder

Participants should bring:

- Close toed shoes (work shoes are preferred, and non-synthetic materials preferred), ensure that the laces are not frayed.

- Wear clothes that are sturdy and flame resistant (e.g. denim, cotton) as synthetic fibers (e.g. polyester) pose a personal hazard in the welding shop environment. Jeans and long sleeve shirt would be appropriate. Ensure that your clothing does not have frayed edges (e.g. around the cuffs of your pants)

Participants will be provided with:

- Metal shop PPE

- Safety glasses

- Ear Plugs

- Welding helmet

- Welding gauntlets

- Welding spats

- Welding beanie

Beginning October 1 2021, we will require proof of vaccination or negative Covid test for all workshops. If you feel unwell, or are exhibiting any cold-like symptoms, do not attend. Masks must be worn for our the entirety of our workshops. Masks must be well-fitted (no gaps), of a tightly-woven fabric (loosely-woven “cheesecloth” masks and plastic face shields are not permitted) and worn fully covering both the nose and mouth.
