Description

Mexico City: From Tenochtitlan to Modern Metropolis

Dr. Beatriz de Alba-Koch

In this sweep of seven centuries starting with the foundation of Tenochtitlan, the American Venice, Dr. Beatriz de Alba-Koch guides us through the transformation of Mexico City into today’s vibrant urban complex. Exploring its avenues, we recognize a Renaissance design traced over Aztec causeways. We admire Baroque palaces and churches, delight in its Enlightenment centres of learning and the arts, and recognize its revolutionary contributions to art and architecture, despite the recurring devastations of wars and earthquakes.

UVic Café Historique 2017-18 Season

The Traveller's Guide to History: Great Cities

Our 2017-18 season is based on a popular UVic course called The Backpacker’s Guide to European History. Of course, you don’t need to strap a backpack on to enjoy travel – but it helps to know a little bit about the history of the places you’re going!

We're thrilled that Hermann's is alive and well and welcoming us back for another season. As in previous years, doors open at 5pm and talks begin at 6:30. Donations of $2 per person are gratefully accepted at the event - bring your toonie!
