MGAA: Seed Collecting in Kyrgyzstan
Event Information
About this event
Come join Yaro Horachek for a photo-rich travel documentary describing his alpine seed collecting trips through Eastern Asia. The plants are unique and the mountainous views are stunning. Yaro is a knowledgeable alpine gardener and great story teller describing his adventures through Kyrgyzstan.
"The Kyrgyzstan adventure was the result of a casual, more or less joking remark "Take me with you" in a telephone conversation with Mojmir [Moymeer] Pavelka, one of a half a dozen of Czechs who travel to many mountain locations to supply rock gardeners with seeds of alpine plants. That conversation took place on Christmas 2016. Mojmir replied "We will count on you". “We” meant that I would be one of four musketeers - Mojmir, Vladimir, Franta and Yaro. The tickets with the Turkish Airlines were ordered in March next year.
We rented a Toyota 4Runner and drove west. During the next three weeks we drove up and down through Kyrgyzstan (more up than down), and collected seeds of almost a hundred species beginning with Dracocephalum nutans at an elevation of 3180 m.
Kyrgyzstan is a very beautiful country in the center of the Tian Shan Mountains; swimming in Issyk-Kul Lake is unforgettable. And so are Mojmir and Vladimir’s stories about collecting in the Caucasus, Himalaya, Dolomites, Alps and other mountains. I hope to make it with them again. Perhaps to Turkey."
Talk will be available for 1 week after to ticket holders.
