Approachable Density

January 25, 2018, 7pm

Workplace One (51 Breithaupt St #100, Kitchener)

Robin Mazumder will be speaking about his research, which explores the psychological impacts of urban design. Robin is a doctoral candidate in cognitive neuroscience at the University of Waterloo. His research is inspired by his passion for urbanism as well as his front line experience working as an occupational therapist in mental health. He graduated with his Master’s in Occupational Therapy from the University of Toronto in 2011. His research is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and he is a 2017 recipient of the Vanier Graduate Scholarship, Canada's most prestigious doctoral award.

Craig Beattie from Perimeter Development Corp will talk about why design matters in development. Craig originally came to Waterloo region through his work with the Waterloo Town Square. In that first development, Craig's work at the square earned him an Urban Land Institute Award as one of the top projects in North America. Since that time Craig has started Perimeter Development Corp which has continued to do valuable projects throughout Waterloo Region and specifically in Kitchener. Within our neighbourhood, Perimeter is best known for their work on the Breithaupt Block, which won a CIU Brownfield award. The Breithaupt Block has transformed Breithaupt Street and set a new bar for urban development in Kitchener particularly with the large glass box that Craig saw through initial design to completion. Perimeter is currently part of the only consortium to bid on the new Transit Hub for Waterloo Region which will be at the corner of King and Victoria and once again push the boundaries of development in Waterloo Region.

Discussion to follow.
